The book tells a story of Bilbo Baggins from The Hill, who, accompanied by Gandalf the wizard and thirteen dwarfs, went, in a very unusual role for a hobbit - a bold burglar, in search for adventures and great tresures, robbed from the dwarfs by Smaug the dragon a long time ago. In the beginning the dwarfs weren't too pleased with the presence of so comfort-loving Bilbo, but in time they learned what it means to be in the company of the hobbit, who turned out to be unexpectedly persistent and helped the dwarfs to get out of many adventures.
"Hobbit" is the book which my adventure with fantasy, and with Middle-earth in partlicular, begun with. The character of Bilbo became familiar to me for a long time - it's the little halfling who made me desire more - I started reading some enormous (as for this time and my age) thick books of the Trilogy (heh, I wonder who came up with the idea to use this term, as it isn't actually a trilogy). And I kept reading... and reading... After reading "The Lord of the Rings" I returned to "Hobbit" again - it was amazing! Already knowing the world of Middlearth, I re-discovered the adventures of Bilbo, Gandalf and the Dwarfs, I understood more things, and even - saw more things. With my mind's eye, I formed the characters, the equipment, the landscapes... And it was beautiful :) And then years were passing, "Hobbit" was lying on a shelf, I would reach for it from time to time, especially when writing the first adventures for my RPG world (I used to be a Game Master, leading my team in a world similar to the Middlearth), I've got to know "Silmarilion", I fell completly into this, wonderfully created, Tolkien's world...
And "Hobbit" will remain my most favourite book forever!
I recommend it to everyone - both big and small, serious and less serious, people with imagination and those, who haven't been given this gift by Nature too generously - read and love Hobbiton, feel the weight of Sting in your hands, examine mithiril, touch a beautiful elfish bow...

Actually, I don't remember how long ago I have read "Hobbit" for the first time. Like for Bilbo the journey to Dal was a journey of his live, the same for me "Hobbit" was the first journey into fantasy genre. It was a wonderful encouragement to further exploring the Middle-earth, which we don't actually see too much in "Hobbit". Thanks to all these things, I decided to read "The Lord of the Rings".
"Hobbit" is obviously a great novel. First poor, little, lost in 'big', as for him, world, the hobbit is just a useless companion, though as the plot goes on he gets more and more of courage, he gains respect. Accidentally, he finds the golden ring, what is going to influence the fate of Middle-earth...
I return to this book very often and very eagerly. Each time, something new can be discovered in it, another view into the world described can be found. I can recommend it with no doubt, as well as encourage to taking a deeper insight into it. It's really worth it!
I had known many fantasy books before I read Hobbit for the first time, so it was going back to the classics for me. Even if some first chapters appered mildly interesting to me, from the moment Bilbo found the ring, the story became fascinating. And it remained so till the end, full of many unexpected plot turns and adventures in which Bilbo played more and more important role than it seemed likely in the beginning.
It's one of the books I need to return to from time to time, and it never stops being as good as in the first reading.
I have read Hobbit three times and I liked it more each time. This book is just wonderful! Beautiful descriptions, brillianf dialogues... Just a perfect book!
This is simply the greatest book ever written. Full of vivid description and engaging action, this book rules.
Very nice book written by Tolkien, who usually bores with descriptions, but in this book there is an interesting and amusing atmosphere. This book led to making whole Trilogy, for what it deserves out appreciation. I recommend to all fans of Tolkien.
This book is the introduction to popular J.R.R Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings', there are so many adventures in this book!! I recommend this book to those who like a bit of thrill while reading books!!
Hobbit, or There and Back Again is one of my favourite fantasy books, I recommend it very warmly to those who didn't enjoyed the pleasure of reading Tolkien's books yet. Tolkien is one of my favourite authors, his books are like air for me, the same as books of David Gemmel. My favourite book is Legend. I warmly recommend it too :)
Great book, giving the beginning to The Lord of the Rings. Very light in reading, wonderful for kids, youth but also for grown-ups. Just for people who like fantasy and Tolkien's books. <4> worth reading.
Hobbit has been written by Bilbo himself, so Tolkien had nothing to do with it :D:D Really great book, I strongly recommend (4)
I took "Hobbit" by accident, actually, because when I had nothing to do at holidays I ordered it by one online shop. Personally, I find this book amazing, the adventure described in it fulfilled the image of Tolkien's Trilogy. I regret just this single thing: that I read Hobbit about a year after reading "The Lord of the Rings". Not trying to be boring, I recommend this, in fact, state of the literature, to every Tolkien's fan and to all who just start their adventure with his creation :)
