In narcotic dream summoned by Lady Coulter, Lyra sees her old friend Roger in the land of dead.

Will, lead by angels, finds the kidnapped girl, and with Ama from nearest village they wake Lyra up and haul through a cut window to another world. The knife gets destroyed, and with children, Lord Asriel's spies -, little dragonfly riders - sneak in.

The bear Iorek comes with help again. Thanks to him the children may still travel between worlds and descend to the lanfd of the dead. Noone ever returned from there - will Lyra be able to willfully leave Pantalaimon?

Dr Mary Malone discovers strange, conscious mulefa creatures. Thanks to them, she gets to know what the dark material - the Dust - is, and builds a spyglass, to make it possible to see it. The Dust leaves - each passage between the worlds opened by the knife causes its leaking, disrupts the balance of universes and may cause to extinction of many wonderful civilizations. It will be for knife guardian to decide, between which worlds the only one, last window shall remain.
