Northern lights

Lyra spends her half-wild childhood in Jordan College in Oxford. One day, curios of the world, the girl sneaks into seniors' hall, where she wittnesses a disquieting event. She influences into the flow of events and she faces cruel secrets of the far north on her way. After disappearence of her best friend, Roger, she goes in quest. Step after step she discovers the mysteries of her origin, The Dust and horrible experiments on children and daemons. She also gains unusual friends among bears and wittnesses the fights of witches clans and creating the entry to the parallel world.

There are no characters definitely good or evil here, but there are people ready to sacrifice everything for higher goals. Lyra will have to play a significant role in this universe - one very close to us, and at the same time so different in many matters.
