Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

This trilogy leads us to England in 19th century. The society of gentelmans, interested in magic, gets broken because of mysterious Mr Norrell, who proves, that practical magic really exists. Since that moment, we witness unusual events: the statues start talking, dead go back from the afterlife, and well known reality intertwines with legendary Faerie land. The youth with hair like thistle-down creates a net of intrigues and bends with it more and more people, including the King of England himself.

Until Norrell is the only magician of England, he enviously protects his secrets and magical books, but after Jonathan Strange appears, all eyes turn on him. It's Strange who goes to front and with various spells supports English soldiers, writes a book about magic and believes in existence of the King of Ravens. He is so busy with it, that he misses to notice a close presence of someone with hair like thistle-down...

I'm not going to give up the story, to not take from you the pleasure of discovering this multiploted novel. Undoubtly, S. Clarke's book is a piece of good, ambitious fantasy literature, and perhaps the only one, where I was carefully following the foot-notes.

  *****

In my opinion, the most beautiful fantasy book ever written. Fantasy books, for me, are the stories of dreams, and I dream about living in such an unusual world as Ethshar and being such a lucky guy...
